About the position

The Sr Principal Chemical Engineer (SRM Propellant) at General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems is responsible for performing engineering work related to the operation of chemical plant equipment and processes. This role involves conducting research and development projects to innovate and optimize chemical products, particularly in the propulsion field. The engineer will leverage advanced principles and theories in chemical engineering, with a focus on energetics and solid propellants, to support the mission of the warfighter.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and development projects involving the study of chemical reactions and material properties to innovate and develop new products or optimize existing products.
  • Designs experiments and builds prototypes and models used to investigate and support the development of improved chemicals, materials, products, and manufacturing processes.
  • Compiles and analyzes testing data.
  • Presents research results used to estimate costs, establish performance standards, identify solutions, and facilitate processes.
  • Maintains lab and plant safety procedures for chemical storage, handling, transport, and disposal.
  • Complies with all safety and environmental regulations.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred in Chemical Engineering or other engineering discipline.
  • 10-12 years of experience in chemical engineering, manufacturing process engineering, product development, and research and development.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong knowledge of chemical engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and industry standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with propellant/explosive formulation for product development, scale-up, and manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of energetic material manufacturing and synthesis.
  • Experience in energetic material hazards analysis, testing, and mitigation strategy development.
  • Familiarity with case bondline development, processing, and adhesion science.
  • Experience in physical testing and characterization of propellant and subsystems.
