About the position

The Senior Principal Chemical Engineer role at Insight Global involves a comprehensive range of engineering tasks focused on the management of chemical plant operations and systems, specifically in the context of solid rocket motor manufacturing. The ideal candidate will leverage a deep understanding of advanced propulsion principles, theories, and concepts, alongside practical knowledge in interconnected disciplines such as thermal dynamics, structural integrity, and ballistics analysis. This position requires extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with energetic substances, solid propellants, and associated materials and products. Candidates should possess significant expertise in physics-based modeling of relevant technologies, which includes polymer mechanics, the impact of environmental factors on material degradation and aging, combustion processes, detonation phenomena, particle packing dynamics, and rheology. The role also encompasses leading research and development initiatives aimed at exploring chemical reactions and material properties to pioneer new products or enhance existing ones. In addition to research and development, the Senior Principal Engineer will design and conduct experiments, construct prototypes and models to support the advancement of superior chemicals, materials, products, and manufacturing methodologies. Responsibilities also include gathering, evaluating, and interpreting test data, as well as communicating research findings to inform cost estimations, set performance benchmarks, propose solutions, and support decision-making processes. A critical aspect of this role is upholding laboratory and plant safety protocols related to the storage, handling, transportation, and disposal of chemicals, ensuring adherence to all pertinent safety and environmental standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and development initiatives that explore chemical reactions and material properties to pioneer new products or enhance existing ones.
  • Design and conduct experiments, construct prototypes and models to support the advancement of superior chemicals, materials, products, and manufacturing methodologies.
  • Gather, evaluate, and interpret test data.
  • Communicate research findings to inform cost estimations, set performance benchmarks, propose solutions, and support decision-making processes.
  • Uphold laboratory and plant safety protocols related to the storage, handling, transportation, and disposal of chemicals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or STEM related field
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance
  • 10+ years of experience in energetics, solid propellant and explosive formulation
  • Deep understanding of the chemical makings of solid rocket motor propellant
  • Knowledge of energetic material manufacturing and synthesis
  • Understanding of energetics material hazards analysis, testing and mitigation strategy development
  • Experience with case bonding development, processing and adhesion science
  • Experience in the testing and characterization of propellant and subsystems
