About the position

The Sr Principal Engineer Hardware (Board/System Design) at Palo Alto Networks is a key contributor in the Platform Hardware development team, responsible for the complete design cycle of hardware products. This includes specification, component selection, schematic entry, layout oversight, prototype bring-up, debug, and validation testing. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and ownership of the product life cycle from concept to production release.

Responsibilities

  • Drive tasks proactively and independently, escalating and communicating issues clearly to the cross-functional team.
  • Work in a fast-paced, dynamic development environment.
  • Own the full product life-cycle from concept to production release.
  • Define, design, bring-up, and debug new PCB designs.
  • Utilize schematic capture and PCB layout tools effectively.
  • Work with lab equipment for hands-on prototyping, design, and power analysis.
  • Support engineering builds and production at the factory when needed.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Computer Engineering (CE); MSEE desired or equivalent military experience required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in hardware development.
  • Multiple successful product design cycles from architecture to production required.
  • Hands-on experience in the design, bring-up, and debug of PCBAs for hardware products launched to customers.
  • Experience managing simultaneous projects from start to finish.
  • Experience prototyping, reworking, and troubleshooting board & component level issues to resolution.
  • Experience using schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
  • Experience using productivity apps such as Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
  • Experience working with factories and internal teams to support builds for production.

  • Networking product design experience.
  • Design for low-cost products.
  • Experience with OT, Ruggedized, IP-rated product design.
  • Embedded CPU design, especially x86 and AMD.
  • Design for integrated radio and Power over Ethernet PSE design.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
