About the position

The Senior Principal Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for managing medium to large complex projects within the energy sector. This role involves significant technical authority and oversight of a team of Instrumentation Engineers and Designers. The engineer will lead technical and scheduling aspects of projects, ensuring alignment with project specifications and objectives, while also providing training and support to junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Instrumentation Engineer in proposals.
  • Provide training to personnel as needed.
  • Prepare or review discipline job specifications.
  • Prepare or review requisitions for equipment, materials, and subcontracts.
  • Approve technical bid evaluations in cooperation with the Procurement Department.
  • Prepare and review operation philosophy and Cause & Effect diagrams.
  • Review and provide inputs to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).
  • Develop Network Architecture, Instrument Index, I/O List and layouts as required.
  • Direct and observe factory acceptance testing of equipment.
  • Review plot plans and facilities for Instrumentation & Control System requirements.
  • Coordinate with client personnel regarding Instrumentation & Control activities.
  • Review and approve vendor documents.
  • Prepare or review engineering and design status reports, work plans, and man-hour estimates.
  • Review the discipline scope of work to ensure it matches project specifications.
  • Accept short and extended term assignments as requested.

Requirements

  • Typically 15+ years of proven experience in oil and gas, focusing on pipeline facilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of natural gas industry standards and codes (NEMA, NFPA, API, AGA, ISA, IEC, ANSI) and ability to apply them to designs.
  • Knowledge of computer systems in an engineering environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering License required, California PE preferred.
