About the position

The Senior/Principal Scientist for Parkinson's Disease Research at 23andMe will play a pivotal role in leading the company's long-standing research program focused on Parkinson's disease. This position requires an experienced scientist who will provide scientific leadership and strategic direction for the program, which involves collaborations with over 33,000 genotyped and phenotyped participants living with Parkinson's disease. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting the scientific direction of the research program, identifying and engaging key internal and external stakeholders, and managing a portfolio of collaborative scientific projects that leverage 23andMe's unique capabilities. The role demands a deep understanding of the Parkinson's disease research landscape and the ability to incorporate scientific and business goals into the program's strategy. In addition to scientific leadership, the Senior/Principal Scientist will be expected to establish and maintain relationships with academic and industry collaborators, advisors, and advocates in the field. The ability to effectively communicate the program's strategy, ideas, and results to both scientific and non-scientific audiences is crucial. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for the mission of curing Parkinson's disease and a commitment to incorporating the perspectives of individuals impacted by the disease into all aspects of the program. This role also involves mentoring junior scientists and fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership and strategic direction for the Parkinson's disease research program.
  • Set the scientific direction of the research program, including identifying and engaging key stakeholders.
  • Establish and manage a portfolio of collaborative scientific projects.
  • Leverage 23andMe's unique capabilities to maximize the impact of participant contributions.
  • Represent the company and the research program at scientific and professional meetings.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a team of scientists.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of internal and external audiences.

Requirements

  • PhD in Neuroscience or related field with at least 5 years of experience post-PhD.
  • Deep understanding of the Parkinson's disease research landscape.
  • Ability to provide strategic direction for the research program.
  • Significant track record of setting and implementing strategic goals.
  • Expertise or hands-on experience with 'Big Data' science applied to neuroscience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain key relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior scientists and coaching them to success.
  • Exceptional communication skills across many mediums.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in drug discovery programs rooted in human genetics.
  • Familiarity with consumer genetics and research methodologies.
