About the position

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Sr. Process Engineer to enhance the development, scale-up, and optimization of manufacturing processes for battery cell production. This role involves collaborating with various teams to transition new battery designs from concept to full production, contributing significantly to Tesla's innovative products in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Responsibilities

  • Drive development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost
  • Plan, execute, and support DoEs to characterize boundary conditions and optimize processes for manufacturability and quality
  • Perform statistical analysis and report out data for trials and DoEs
  • Develop, own, and update process documentation such as manufacturing instructions, OCAPs, PFMEA, etc.
  • Create and maintain SPC charts for new processes and cell designs including control limits, spec limits and decision rules
  • Provide on-call support for cell pilot lines
  • Manage activities of engineering technicians or other engineers to support day-to-day coverage of pilot lines
  • Champion continuous improvement projects and standardization to support best-in-class lean manufacturing systems to maximize OEE
  • Develop and manage PFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of process engineering experience
  • Experience and knowledge of Li-ion battery chemistry, cell assembly, and manufacturing processes strongly preferred
  • Experience with web handling and roll-to-roll processing strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of MySQL, Python / R and JMP / Minitab
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and meet deliverable deadlines amidst changing requirements, deadlines, and priorities
  • People management experience is a plus
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and organizational skills as well as the ability to work and manage time independently
  • Deep understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
  • Proactive self-starter with a can-do attitude
