About the position

The Sr. Process Engineer at Tesla will focus on implementing, developing, and optimizing production methodologies within the manufacturing operations, specifically in the Drive Unit Final Assembly. This role is crucial for enhancing product flow through process optimization, collaborating with various engineering teams to solve problems, improve manufacturability, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. The engineer will also be responsible for sustaining products with cost reduction and yield improvements while ensuring compliance with quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop expertise in manufacturing processes and understand process capabilities through critical data analysis.
  • Develop and modify line layouts, including material flow, waste reduction, and ergonomics, utilizing Lean Manufacturing best practices.
  • Participate in the transition of a product from concept to pilot line production and into mass manufacturing.
  • Analyze and optimize production processes to ensure safety while maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Champion continuous improvement projects (CIP) to maximize yield, capacity, and capability.
  • Diagnose issues found during the part manufacturing process and drive corrective action back to source.
  • Utilize structured problem-solving techniques such as DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Why (5W) and Eight Disciplines (8D).
  • Analyze data from various sources to identify trends in build quality and efficiency.
  • Develop robust and clear data collection, visualization, and analysis tools.
  • Monitor and reduce process variation using techniques such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).
  • Create and maintain Manufacturing Instructions, routings, and associated processes.
  • Develop and train sustaining technicians, assist in the training of operators as needed.
  • Support other Manufacturing Equipment Engineering teams during diagnosis and troubleshooting of equipment issues.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 6+ years of industrial experience in high pace production environment focused on assembly and product quality.
  • Expert level knowledge of statistical tools such as Statistical Process Control (SPCs), Design of experiments, ANOVA methods, and capability analysis (Cp, Cpk).
  • Industrial level experience dealing with design software like Solidworks, AutoCAD, or CATIA.
  • Data collection and analysis experience, with proficiency in MySQL and programming tools like Python, R, and visualization software like Tableau.
  • Experience developing and improving processes with a track record of Overall Equipment Effectiveness improvement activities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an aptitude for learning systems quickly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience using programming tools like Python, R, and visualization software like Tableau is a plus.
  • Understanding of ladder logic programming from Allen Bradley or Siemens systems.
