About the position

The Senior Procurement Specialist - Construction at American Water is responsible for managing the sourcing of goods, services, and projects related to capital projects valued between $5M and $150M. This role involves leading project teams through the sourcing, negotiation, and contract award processes, with a focus on reducing total cost of ownership and enhancing supplier relationships. The position is expected to contribute to the company's capital plan and achieve cost reduction goals while ensuring compliance with specifications and business requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare bid packages, statement of work documents, and requests (RFP/RFI) according to specifications and business requirements.
  • Build, lead, and maintain development of sourcing strategies from project identification through close-out including alternative sourcing options.
  • Build and maintain Supplier/Contractor relationships to reduce total costs, increase productivity, and eliminate inefficiencies in the supply chain.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop and implement category and supplier initiatives resulting in process efficiencies and total cost of ownership savings.
  • Drive use of spend analytics and market research to develop profiles for assigned categories.
  • Drive development of KPIs for both supplier and category performance, establishing 'should cost' models and identifying opportunities for supplier negotiations.
  • Collaborate with business, state leadership, and operations management to gather feedback and influence category strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Finance, Engineering or related disciplines or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 6 years' total work experience.
  • Minimum 4 years' of procurement or category management experience.
  • Knowledge of sourcing strategies and methodologies related to service and construction procurement.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills to produce the best product/service at the lowest total cost of ownership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written presentation form.
  • Experience analyzing industry trends and conditions to inform sourcing strategies.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPM or CPSM preferred - Other supply chain certifications a plus.
  • Utility procurement experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of SAP is preferred.
  • Understanding of Lean / Six Sigma concepts and tools.
