About the position

The Sr. Product Designer I at OpenGov is responsible for leading the design process to create effective and user-centered solutions for government software. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, utilizing design principles, and ensuring that the design aligns with user needs and company goals. The designer will also mentor junior designers and present their work to stakeholders, contributing to the overall mission of transforming government services.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage design principles and personas to craft elegant, practical solutions.
  • Design wireframes, mockups, and prototypes, validating them with users and internal experts.
  • Own and drive all phases of the design process for the product line, collaborating with product management and engineering leaders.
  • Use research data and product analytics to understand user needs and communicate solutions.
  • Lead and coach junior designers.
  • Steward the design system by creating reusable patterns across products.
  • Help the team choose appropriate methods and tools for creative problem solving.
  • Present work to stakeholders to receive feedback and showcase the value of design.

Requirements

  • Typically 4+ years of experience working in a cross-functional design team.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles applied to software.
  • Experience leading the design process from concept to implementable solution.
  • Strong communication skills to present complex ideas to stakeholders clearly.
  • Ability to simplify complex data and user workflows into intuitive solutions.
  • Proficiency in design software tools such as Figma (preferred), Sketch, etc.
  • Completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field or relevant experience.
  • Experience with complex systems and wicked problems in government, finance, or enterprise domains.
  • Experience applying various design research methods to gain insights.
  • Experience in designing for and scaling accessibility across an organization.
