About the position

The Sr. Automation Project Engineer at Thermo Fisher Scientific's St. Louis site plays a pivotal role in the development and execution of Capital Engineering projects within a multi-product and multi-client bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This position is integral to ensuring that innovative solutions are provided to clients while adhering to the highest standards of quality and compliance. The engineer will lead and collaborate with both internal teams and external partners to estimate, develop, and deliver projects that encompass a variety of design requirements, including Distributed Control Networks, SCADA systems, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). In this role, the engineer will be responsible for directing project teams, ensuring that all critical activities are planned and agreed upon with customers. A comprehensive project schedule will be developed and maintained, starting from the Basis of Design (BOD) through to validation and turnover. The engineer will also lead the design and development of the site’s Operational Technology (OT) master plan, which includes the development of distributed control systems, supervisory systems, and data visualization software. The position requires the preparation and presentation of project updates to executive levels and steering committees, as well as managing site change requests and supporting the development of User Requirements Specifications (URS). Financial leadership is also a key component, as the engineer will manage all financial aspects of assigned projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate across multiple groups to provide innovative solutions for clients.
  • Lead capital projects with diverse design requirements, including Distributed Control Networks, SCADA's, MES systems, and OSI PI.
  • Direct projects and teams, ensuring all critical activities are planned and agreed upon by the customer.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive project schedule from Basis of Design (BOD) through validation and turnover.
  • Lead all aspects of the design and development of the site OT master plan.
  • Develop distributed control and supervisory systems, SCADA, Historians, and SQL type program development.
  • Prepare and present project updates to executive levels and steering committees.
  • Handle site change requests and support User Requirements Specification (URS) development.
  • Manage all financial aspects of assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field is required; preferred Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
  • 7-10 years of experience in engineering and automation systems, ideally within Pharmaceutical, Nutritional, Packaging, or Aseptic environments.
  • Ability to address issues of moderate to high complexity regarding processes and product quality within facilities, equipment, and manufacturing support areas.
  • Competence in making decisions that account for compliance and product quality risks.
  • Experience leading projects of moderate to high complexity and leading compliance-related challenges.
  • Experience leading large capital projects in engineering and construction.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and reliably.
  • Strong time management, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
