About the position

The position at Smith+Nephew involves applying engineering expertise to develop innovative solutions for the healthcare sector, specifically expanding the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) product portfolio. The role encompasses leading design activities from ideation to commercialization, ensuring compliance with medical device regulations, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to meet user needs. Candidates will engage in product design, prototyping, testing, and validation, contributing to the creation of market-leading medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and develop innovative concepts for new and/or improved products for minimally invasive and open surgical procedures.
  • Generate design control requirements, including design inputs, 3D models, model-driven drawings, and detailed specifications in accordance with medical device regulatory guidelines.
  • Partner with surgeons and healthcare professionals to identify unmet user needs and translate feedback into design requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to drive projects to completion within schedule.
  • Manage partnerships with internal and external resources for concept/product development and testing of devices.
  • Evaluate physical systems and designs using analytical and experimental methods.
  • Define test methods, develop test fixtures, and execute testing of complex mechanical and/or electro-mechanical systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of technical problems and identify potential solutions.
  • Support pre-clinical and/or clinical testing of devices and systems.
  • Generate intellectual property in support of novel ideas and concepts.
  • Conduct detailed design reviews at various design stages.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, or closely related field.
  • B.S. degree + 4 years hands-on experience in a regulated field; M.S. degree + 2 years hands-on experience.
  • Minimum 1 year in the medical device industry with experience at all stages of a product lifecycle from ideation to commercialization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design activities and manage projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
