About the position

The Sr. Research Application Systems Analyst at Columbia University plays a crucial role in the Research Computing Services (RCS) team, focusing on high-performance computing (HPC) services and development projects. This position serves as a liaison for faculty, research staff, and graduate students, providing guidance on research application usage and approaches while ensuring the effective administration and improvement of HPC services.

Responsibilities

  • Administers the HPC scheduling software layer, implementing user requirements and ongoing improvements to CUIT HPC services.
  • Provides SLURM Scheduler user consulting, including job configuration, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Handles software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting requests from researchers.
  • Takes initiative to understand the intricacies of the HPC scheduler and resource management.
  • Identifies and collaborates with HPC team members and CUIT technical resources to provide solutions.
  • Manages access to HPC clusters and participates in HPC development initiatives.
  • Researches new technologies and approaches to improve CUIT HPC services and bridges regional and national resources.
  • Analyzes requirements, designs, develops, and implements technologies and applications related to HPC.
  • Ensures compliance with architectural and security standards in contributions.
  • Performs independent and complex functional and technical analysis for supporting initiatives.
  • May assist in the installation and management of configuration, monitoring, and notification tools, as well as basic network administration.
  • Acts as a consultant for faculty and research staff on research application use and approaches.
  • Educates and promotes HPC services, options, and best practices.
  • Collaborates with researchers to optimize scientific and research applications for HPC environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 4-6 years' related experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience in Linux/Unix systems administration and scripting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities and multiple projects effectively.
  • Attention to detail and precision in work is essential.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work weekends and off-hours as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of high-performance computing concepts and technologies.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $100,000 - $125,000 based on qualifications and experience.
