About the position

The Powertrain Systems team at Southwest Research Institute is dedicated to the design, development, and integration of advanced powertrain concepts into vehicles and machines. This role is pivotal in supporting the development of commercial vehicle transportation solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions and harmful pollutants. As a Senior Research Engineer, you will be at the forefront of innovation, working on conventional, electrified, and alternative fuel powertrains. You will lead the team in designing control systems and architectures for embedded controllers in proof-of-concept powertrains and vehicles. This position also involves preparing proposals, managing project efforts, writing reports, and publishing peer-reviewed papers, allowing you to contribute significantly to the field while collaborating with world-class test cells to address industry challenges. In this role, you will act as a systems engineer for automotive powertrains, developing software solutions for control and diagnostics of engines, aftertreatment systems, and electric machines. You will engage with both internal and external customers to establish technical requirements and facilitate the development of specification documents and system architectures. Your responsibilities will include working with stakeholders to allocate functions to components and systems, developing those allocations into requirements for engineers, designers, and managers, and supporting software revision control and tracking. You will also maintain and expand a library of software features available for customers and document processes developed during system integration tasks, including functional requirements, FMEA, interface diagrams, and diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a systems engineer over automotive powertrains.
  • Develop software solutions for control and diagnostics of engines, aftertreatment, and electric machines for integration in test cells, HIL stands, or vehicles.
  • Meet with internal and external customers to establish system technical requirements and facilitate development of specification documents and system architectures.
  • Work with stakeholders to allocate functions to components/systems and develop those allocations into requirements for the engineers, designers, and managers to design, develop, integrate and test.
  • Support software revision control and tracking.
  • Maintain and expand library of software features available for customers.
  • Document processes developed during system integration tasks such as functional requirements, FMEA, interface diagrams, and monitors and diagnostics.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related Engineering degree.
  • 5-8 years of experience in Matlab/Simulink for software development, CAN and vehicle controller development and debugging.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, UDP, TCP/IP, SENT, etc.
  • Code development for dSPACE, Mototron, Dana OpenECU or similar controllers.
  • 5-8 years of experience in one or more of the following for powertrain systems: System or design FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis, functional safety and technical safety concepts, ASIL.
  • Experience in system optimization and development for automotive or commercial vehicle powertrains, aftertreatment systems, or electrified powertrains.
  • ISO 26262 certification, High voltage safety training and similar is a plus.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field may reduce years of required experience.
