About the position

As a Sr. RF Hardware Development Engineer at SpaceX, you will play a crucial role in streamlining the production of Avionics hardware across the company's fleet of spacecraft and launch vehicles. Your primary responsibility will be to design new avionics hardware as part of spacecraft system re-architectures, while also improving existing designs. This involves not only creating new hardware from scratch but also enhancing the reliability and manufacturability of RF products throughout their life cycle. You will troubleshoot electronic assemblies, identify root causes of issues, implement design updates, and design fixtures and tools to improve product performance. Your contributions will be vital in driving improvements to vehicle architectures and RF hardware designs, ultimately helping SpaceX advance its mission of exploring the stars. In this role, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks including designing new hardware, modifying existing PCBAs and mechanical drawings, and conducting thorough testing of avionics hardware. You will engage in full functional testing of assembled units and resolve any anomalies that arise during vehicle operations. Additionally, you will modify electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to ensure they meet the necessary reliability and manufacturability standards for flight applications. Your expertise in RF systems will be essential as you design and troubleshoot RF test setups and associated support equipment, ensuring effective execution of testing strategies. You will also participate in manufacturing assessments of new RF designs, driving optimization for manufacturability and cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Design new hardware, redesign existing hardware, and perform modifications to PCBAs and mechanical drawings to improve their reliability and manufacturability
  • Responsible for troubleshooting avionics hardware spanning PCBA board testing and defect detection, full functional testing of an assembled unit, and resolving on-vehicle anomalies
  • Modify electrical schematics and mechanical drawings for flight applications as they relate to reliability and manufacturability
  • Design and troubleshoot RF (UHF, S-Band, X, Ka, or Ku bands) test setups and associated support equipment to support execution of testing strategies
  • Participate in manufacturing assessments of new RF designs and drive optimization for manufacturability and cost

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with electronic components, environments testing, unit level testing, or RF systems
  • 5+ years of experience using 3D EM simulation tools (CST, HFSS, FEKO, SEMCAD, EMPro, TICRA or XFDTD)
  • 5+ years of experience with Matlab, LabVIEW, Python, SPICE, SQL, and/or National Instruments hardware
  • Laboratory experience with test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers, channel emulators, oscilloscopes, and power meters

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in electrical or computer engineering discipline with emphasis in RF/microwave circuits or electromagnetic theory
  • Ability to design and integrate RF circuit elements such as LNAs, PAs, filters, mixers, and antennas
