About the position

The Senior Scientist, Snacks is a pivotal role within Campbell Snacks, specifically focusing on the development of pretzel brands such as Snyder's of Hanover and Snack Factory. This position is responsible for leading product development efforts, which encompass new product innovations, line extensions, cost-saving initiatives, and quality improvements. The Senior Scientist will ensure that all objectives, product designs, and timelines are met while responding resourcefully to new demands and challenges throughout the product development and commercialization process. This includes implementing best practices to facilitate effective knowledge transfer to manufacturing teams. In this role, the Senior Scientist must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence decisions within a cross-functional team that includes Marketing, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Process Development, Package Development, Sensory, and Flavor Technology. The position requires a solid understanding of food science, business operations, and commercialization processes, along with practical knowledge of existing products and new technologies. The Senior Scientist will provide technical specifications and support to ensure smooth rollouts of new products and processes during plant startups, including comprehensive process documentation to enable effective commercialization and training of plant personnel. The Senior Scientist is expected to foster an environment that encourages innovation and calculated risk-taking, contributing to the overall success of the Campbell Snacks portfolio. This role reports directly to the Senior Manager for the respective brand and/or product family, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and operational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification, assessment, and validation of formulations from benchtop through commercialization.
  • Manage the financial aspects of product development, including ingredient costs for plant trials.
  • Ensure all proper documentation is done accurately and on schedule.
  • Conduct and lead assessment and capability studies, product startups/commercialization, and provide on-site support to Plant Operations for new products, productivity, and quality programs.
  • Foster an innovation culture by continually introducing ideas and product concepts for new products, quality improvements, and productivity.
  • Create, design, and supervise the development of new experimental protocols/best practices required to validate product concepts and prototypes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or Technology, Bakery Science, or related field.
  • 5 years' experience working in food manufacturing product development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Consumer-packaged goods background.
  • Experience with pretzels, salty snacks, extruded snacks, dough systems, and other snacks unit operations.
  • Product Development - pretzel/salty snack emphasis; preferably someone who has successfully commercialized snack products in the market.
  • A passion for great food, food science, and product development.
  • Excellent analytical and statistical skills, strong attention to detail, good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle and lead multiple projects at any given time in a team environment.
  • Ability to think beyond their own (R D) function to consider the organization and its purpose holistically.
