About the position

The Sr Software Engineer - Java position at M&T Bank is a hybrid role that allows for remote work two days a week, providing flexibility while also encouraging in-person collaboration. This role is pivotal in designing and specifying information systems solutions, offering high-level technical direction in the development of both new and existing applications. The engineer will tackle a range of problems, from basic to complex, and will serve as a principal application designer for critical components and major modifications. Utilizing analytical and technical skills, the engineer will evaluate client requirements and processes to deliver technologically sound solutions. Additionally, the role involves directing and monitoring the activities of less experienced personnel, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and effectively. In this position, the engineer will complete and oversee complex systems analysis, design, and development efforts, playing a key role as both a leader and an individual contributor on significant projects. The engineer will provide analytical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies to assist client areas and the bank in achieving their short-term business goals and long-term strategic objectives. Responsibilities include preparing and managing technical components of project plans, conferring with development and operations staff, preparing and reviewing test data, and executing detailed test plans. The engineer will also evaluate complex interrelationships among programs and prepare thorough technical and functional specifications. The position requires maintaining the efficient operation of supported applications, recommending new technologies, and adhering to the company's risk and regulatory standards. The engineer will also be involved in developing expense and capital budgets, monitoring employee performance, and may prepare annual appraisals. The role is supervised by technology management and requires the jobholder to work independently on high-level systems analysis and technical phases of development, while also managing the activities of others on various projects.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and oversee the most complex systems analysis, design and development efforts.
  • Play a key role as a leader and individual contributor on complex projects.
  • Provide the highest level analytical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies.
  • Direct and monitor less experienced resources and coordinate development tasks for any scope project.
  • Prepare and manage the technical component of project plans.
  • Confer with other Development, operations staff and Technology staff in overall systems development direction.
  • Prepare and review test data and execute detailed test plans.
  • Evaluate and understand highly complex interrelationships and effects among programs, interfacing applications and platforms.
  • Prepare thorough, clear technical and functional specifications and update systems documentation.
  • Maintain efficient operation and effectiveness of supported applications.
  • Recommend new technology, policies or processes to benefit the organization.
  • Follow and promote use of development standards and procedures.
  • Assist in developing expense and capital budgets.
  • Monitor employee performance and may prepare annual appraisals.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate's degree and 6 years' systems analysis/application development experience, or a combined minimum of 8 years' higher education and/or work experience including a minimum of 6 years' systems analysis/application development experience.
  • Familiar with application development software and hardware platforms.
  • Proficiency with personal computers as well as pertinent project management, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to assist in issue resolution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with prior experience presenting to the target audience.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong lateral thinking skills.
  • Experience coordinating between Applications and business units.
  • Experience recommending and implementing system solutions.
  • Experience driving project milestones and delivery dates.
  • Proven mentoring and leadership capabilities from a project management perspective.

  • Good understanding of the Bank's application framework.
  • Subject matter expert in business with knowledge or experience utilizing application/system being supported.
  • Mastered understanding of applications supported with an advanced knowledge of interfacing/integrated applications.
