About the position

The Senior Software Engineer - Java position is a hybrid role based in Buffalo, NY, where the individual will provide designs and specify information systems solutions while offering the highest level of technical direction in the development of new or existing applications. This role is crucial for solving both basic and complex problems or enhancements, serving as a principal application designer for critical components and major modifications. The successful candidate will utilize their analytical and technical skills, along with available technology and tools, to evaluate client requirements and processes, ensuring that the solutions provided are technologically sound. Additionally, the role involves directing and monitoring the activities of less experienced personnel, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. In this position, the Senior Software Engineer will complete and oversee complex systems analysis, design, and development efforts, playing a key role as both a leader and an individual contributor on intricate projects. The engineer will provide high-level analytical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies to assist client areas and the bank in achieving their short-term business goals and long-term strategic objectives. Responsibilities include preparing and managing the technical components of project plans, conferring with development and operations staff, and preparing and reviewing test data and executing detailed test plans. The role also requires evaluating and understanding complex interrelationships among programs, interfacing applications, and platforms. The engineer will prepare thorough technical and functional specifications, update systems documentation, and prepare charts and diagrams to assist in problem analysis. Furthermore, the position involves maintaining the efficient operation of supported applications, recommending new technologies, and leading technical evaluations of vendor software. The Senior Software Engineer will also be responsible for monitoring employee performance, preparing annual appraisals, and ensuring adherence to the company's risk and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and oversee the most complex systems analysis, design and development efforts.
  • Play a key role as a leader and individual contributor on complex projects.
  • Provide the highest level analytical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies.
  • Direct and monitor less experienced resources and coordinate development tasks for any scope project.
  • Prepare and manage the technical component of project plans.
  • Confer with other Development, operations staff and Technology staff in overall systems development direction.
  • Prepare and review test data and execute detailed test plans.
  • Evaluate and understand highly complex interrelationships and effects among programs, interfacing applications and platforms.
  • Prepare thorough, clear technical and functional specifications and update systems documentation.
  • Prepare and review assessments to include required tasks, estimated time frames and effort for any scope project.
  • Maintain efficient operation and effectiveness of supported applications.
  • Recommend new technology, policies or processes to benefit the organization.
  • Lead or participate in technical evaluations of vendor software.
  • Follow and promote use of development standards and procedures.
  • Assist in developing expense and capital budgets.
  • Monitor employee performance and may prepare annual appraisals.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate's degree and 6 years' systems analysis/application development experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 8 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 6 years' systems analysis/application development experience.
  • Familiar with application development software and hardware platforms.
  • Proficiency with personal computers as well as pertinent project management, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Capable of working on multiple projects of a complex nature.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to assist in issue resolution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with prior experience presenting to the target audience.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Strong lateral thinking skills.
  • Experience coordinating between Applications and business units.
  • Experience recommending and implementing system solutions.
