About the position

The Sr. Software Engineer position focuses on developing software solutions to optimize complex systems, particularly with Oracle technologies. The role involves analyzing application performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing solutions to enhance scalability and efficiency. This position is remote but prefers candidates located in the Austin, TX area, and it offers a structured work schedule from Monday to Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate application, system, and ecosystem performance and scalability across multiple tiers, focusing on the data tier in both cloud and on-prem environments.
  • Identify performance and scalability bottlenecks and propose solutions.
  • Simulate user/system traffic/load using scripts or other mechanisms, measure, evaluate, and analyze component behavior.
  • Optimize code, queries, and system configurations to improve response time, scalability, and resource efficiency (CPU, memory, I/O).
  • Analyze and interpret Oracle wait events, AWR raw data, and trace, correlating observations to system behavior.
  • Generate and analyze AWR, ASH, and ADDM reports.
  • Extrapolate system behavior under representative load to predict system behavior under full load/stress.
  • Communicate complex results, analysis, and metrics to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Evaluate and predict future performance needs based on application usage trends, traffic patterns, and growth projections.
  • Conduct detailed root cause analysis (RCA) on performance issues to pinpoint underlying causes of slowdowns or failures.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience analyzing and evaluating application performance across multiple tiers.
  • Experience identifying and implementing solutions for performance and scalability bottlenecks.
  • Proficiency with Oracle wait interface and event analysis.
  • Experience with performance tuning of large Oracle databases in AWS (50+ TB).
  • Experience with large Oracle Exadata databases and clusters.
  • Experience with single-node non-Exadata database tuning.
  • Proficiency in Linux shell scripting, SQL tuning, and session tracing.
  • Experience generating and analyzing AWR, ASH, and ADDM reports.
  • Experience with Oracle AWR raw data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to extrapolate system behavior under representative load to predict full load/stress behavior.
  • Experience presenting complex results, analysis, and metrics to diverse audiences.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for performance bottlenecks and issues.
  • Knowledge of Oracle internals related to database performance.
  • Understanding of application behavior, performance, and interaction patterns with databases in relation to performance and scalability.
  • Technical writing and diagramming skills, including proficiency with modeling and mapping tools (e.g., Visio, Erwin), and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and MS Project.
  • Experience working with multiple teams concurrently, prioritizing, and completing work on time with high quality.
