About the position

The Senior Software Engineer for the Refunds Management Team at Southwest Airlines plays a crucial role in supporting the Finance and Customer Support and Services organizations through the RefundPro application. This position is integral to the delivery of a multi-year Cloud development initiative, which aims to enhance customer capabilities and strengthen partnerships with key business and technology stakeholders. The Senior Software Engineer is expected to embody a problem-solving mindset with a focus on continuous improvement, driving the future of Southwest's technology landscape. This role is offered as a remote workplace position, although it may require occasional travel for training, meetings, and conferences. While the majority of work can be performed remotely, there are specific states and localities where employees are ineligible to work off-site. U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. is required, and no work authorization sponsorship is available.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical direction and feature roadmap of large-scale cloud systems
  • Serve as a technical lead contributing to and directing the efforts of development teams, including internal and external team members
  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions
  • Drive detailed definition of feature requirements through discussions with product managers and customers
  • Support continuous improvement by investigating alternatives and new technologies
  • Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming
  • Evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, properly structured, meets industry standards, and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems
  • Mentor Software Engineers to allow for skill/knowledge development through advice, coaching, and training opportunities
  • Update job knowledge by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques, and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Systems, or related field; or equivalent formal training
  • Advanced-level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in software development and methodologies
  • Advanced knowledge of software development methodologies, practices, concepts, and technologies obtained through formal training and/or work experience
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one required programming language
  • Excellent partnering, communication, negotiation skills, and execution in working with various Technology or partner Teams
  • Ability to articulate (verbally/visually) ideas, approach, concepts, options, risk, impact, and provide guidance to technical, non-technical, and Leadership audiences
  • Ability to lead multiple assignments, whether administrative or project related, while maintaining a successful level of completion in all responsible work
  • Ability to mentor others
  • Ability to lead ideating, presentations, mentoring, and group-thinking sessions
  • Ability to influence without authority

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of SAFe Agile
  • Experience with AWS cloud-based technology development platforms and cloud DevOps platforms
  • Experience with high-level programming languages like Java or Python
  • Experience with API development and design
  • Experience with AWS Cloud serverless architecture using Lambdas, Step Functions, and API Gateway, AWS Cloudwatch, Cloudtrail
  • Experience with Kafka Event Streams, SQS, SNS
