About the position

The Sr Staff Data Center Operations/DevOps Engineer at Palo Alto Networks is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the performance, reliability, and efficiency of the data center infrastructure. This role involves collaboration with the DevOps team to ensure operational coverage for the SaaS product, building automated tools for cloud operations, and mentoring the SRE culture. The engineer will also take full responsibility for the production environment, develop Infrastructure-as-code, and manage data center server operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the DevOps team to provide operational coverage for the SaaS product.
  • Build automated tools for cloud operations, including automated remediation of known issues and auto-scaling.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering team to influence product operability.
  • Participate in design reviews and on-call rotations with SRE and Dev teams.
  • Take end-to-end responsibility for the production environment of the SaaS product deployed on GCP.
  • Develop Infrastructure-as-code for orchestrating production and development environments.
  • Design, build, maintain, and scale production services with thousands of Kubernetes clusters.
  • Manage onsite and remote data center server break/fix operations.
  • Troubleshoot OS, hardware, and components.
  • Handle server installation, rack and stack, and cabling.
  • Decommission and repurpose servers in data centers.
  • Manage hardware replacement ordering and inventory management.

Requirements

  • 4+ years experience as a DevOps/SRE engineer with a focus on high reliability and service level.
  • Ability to operate independently and take responsibility for decisions and actions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for coordination between multiple teams.
  • High proficiency in scripting languages such as Shell, Python, or Go.
  • High proficiency with Linux operating systems.
  • High proficiency in containerized environments, specifically Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Ability to quickly grasp new technologies and multitask on multiple responsibilities.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional or military experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with Google Cloud Platform operations.
  • Experience with Prometheus and other cloud-native monitoring solutions.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and Configuration Management.
  • Experience with Ansible and/or Terraform.
  • Knowledge of CentOS, Ubuntu, and Windows patching.
