About the position

The Sr. Staff Engineer Mission Architect position at Northrop Grumman involves providing technical leadership within the Tactical Space Systems Division, focusing on the development of innovative space mission concepts and flight programs. The role requires collaboration with a multi-disciplined team to create and mature spacecraft designs that support Science and Robotic Exploration missions. Candidates will be responsible for managing technical teams, authoring proposals, and presenting technical briefings, all while working towards long-range goals in a consultative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive and develop custom solutions to complex analytical, design, and test problems from mission requirements.
  • Create complex space mission concepts using commercially available components with flight heritage.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to mature spacecraft concepts for contract awards.
  • Author Request For Information (RFI) responses and technical content for proposals.
  • Prepare and present technical briefings for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage a technical team, sometimes spanning external organizations.
  • Support contractual technical reviews.
  • Provide periodic status and technical performance reviews to Program Management and/or executive management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a STEM field with 14 years of experience, or 12 years with a Master's, or 10 years with a PhD.
  • Familiarity with orbital dynamics and space physics.
  • Experience with early spacecraft/satellite concept development.
  • Experience selecting spacecraft components to meet custom mission requirements.
  • Ability to develop preliminary system budgets from customer-unique mission requirements.
  • Ability to calculate mass properties from component selections and placements.
  • Ability to lead a technical team to complete Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and/or Statements of Work (SOWs).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or equivalent document generation software, Microsoft SharePoint or equivalent collaboration tools, Matlab or equivalent computational tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with NASA acquisition processes.
  • Space mission architecture design experience.
  • Experience with LEOStar-2 or LEOStar-3 avionics.
  • Experience with high-level and low-level interface definition and maturation.
  • Experience with troubleshooting within a satellite/observatory level Integration and Test (I&T) campaign.
  • Experience with on-orbit anomaly investigation and resolution.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft subsystems such as Command and Data Handling, Flight Software, Electrical Power Subsystem, Structures and Mechanisms, Thermal Control, Guidance, Navigation, and Control, and Propulsion subsystems.
  • Ability to develop requirements and preliminary designs through a model-based approach.
  • Proficient in using the requirement development and management tool, DOORS.
