About the position

The Sr Surgical Technologist (L&D) at Houston Methodist is responsible for providing expert support in the operating room during obstetrical procedures, ensuring the safety and efficiency of surgical operations. This role involves mentoring other surgical technologists, preparing the operating room, and maintaining sterile techniques while assisting the surgical team. The position emphasizes relationship-centered care and requires independent judgment in patient care and surgical support.

Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and nursing staff during obstetrical procedures.
• Assist the circulating RN with surgical counts and care of instruments post-procedure.
• Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique throughout surgical procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement practices and report near misses to enhance patient care.
• Mentor and train new surgical technologists, providing structured feedback and support.
• Facilitate teamwork and communication within the healthcare team to achieve optimal results.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent education.
• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency.
• Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
• BLS - Basic Life Support certification (AHA).
• CST - Certified Surgical Technologist certification (NBSTSA) or TS-C certification (NCCT).

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in obstetrical and gynecologic procedures.
• Knowledge of hospital database systems such as EPIC.
• Proficiency in surgical instruments and supplies.
