About the position

Primetals Technologies, a global leader in engineering and manufacturing capital equipment for the steel-making industry, is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer for its Electrics Automation Group located in Sutton, MA. This position is critical for the development and design of complex systems that integrate both hardware and software components, particularly focusing on Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks including complex material specification, schematic preparation, and the development of recommendations aimed at improving productivity, reducing costs, and enhancing customer satisfaction. The role requires a deep understanding of the technical interchange and knowledge transfer processes, ensuring that both the application of products and system design are effectively communicated. The Senior Systems Engineer will design and specify hardware for VFDs, parametrize and tune programs for specific industrial metal technology applications, and identify and resolve problems as they arise, often in complex situations. Collaboration with project managers, team members, and customers is essential during project execution to ensure successful outcomes. Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or an equivalent combination of education and experience, particularly in VFD system design. A minimum of five years of experience working with medium to large VFDs in industrial settings is required, along with detailed knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices related to steel mill equipment. The position also demands strong teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively in diverse, multinational groups, as well as a willingness to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Develop and design complex systems that integrate hardware and software, focusing on Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
• Prepare complex material specifications and schematics, ensuring appropriate follow-up on projects.
• Develop recommendations for productivity improvement, cost reduction, and enhancement of customer satisfaction.
• Guide technical interchange and knowledge transfer related to processes and product applications in system design.
• Design and specify hardware for Variable Frequency Drives.
• Parametrize and tune programs for VFDs for specific industrial metal technology applications.
• Identify and resolve problems as they occur, particularly in complex situations.
• Collaborate with project managers, team members, and customers during project execution.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent combination of education and experience in drive systems.
• 5+ years of experience with medium to large Variable Frequency Drives in industrial settings.
• Detailed knowledge of equipment, processes, systems, and facilities related to electrical engineering of steel mill equipment.
• Strong understanding of complex engineering principles, calculation methods, equipment design, and equipment selection.
• Good team skills and ability to work effectively in large, diverse, multinational groups.
• Flexibility and willingness to travel occasionally in the US and abroad.
• Knowledge of drive systems such as Siemens Sinamics S120, ABB ACS880, or Rockwell Powerflex.
• Understanding of motor operations and the ability to specify and select motors.
