About the position

The Senior Systems Engineer at Berkley Technology Services (BTS) is responsible for designing and implementing significant new functionalities within the Unix infrastructure, ensuring performance, stability, and supportability. This role involves providing advanced troubleshooting, project architecture oversight, and operational leadership while participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation for critical service calls. The engineer will also mentor team members and contribute to technical documentation and proposals, playing a key role in the planning and execution of infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design significant new functionality with a focus on performance, stability, and supportability.
  • Review and provide feedback on business requirements to leverage technology for business improvements.
  • Define standards and design patterns for system development within the team.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of systems, infrastructure, and related hardware and software.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting for infrastructure, networking, security, and application issues.
  • Offer project architecture and oversight with technical expertise on infrastructure projects.
  • Assess and recommend architectural designs/changes to customer systems based on business or technical drivers.
  • Contribute to written proposals and develop technical documentation.
  • Provide operational and technical leadership to the team.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for Priority Level 3 and higher service calls.
  • Develop strategic direction and road maps for Unix infrastructure.
  • Set design standards for system and project planning.
  • Support Unix administrators in complex issue resolution and ensure proper monitoring of Unix infrastructure.
  • Act as Unix Project Manager in infrastructure projects.
  • Support Kubernetes Platform solutions both On-Prem and Cloud.
  • Demonstrate support and deployment of high availability Linux, AIX / P-Series Environments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for specific technologies within the infrastructure practice.
  • Communicate problem/resolution processes clearly to customers or management.
  • Collaborate with technical staff, including project managers.
  • Mentor and cross-train technical staff.
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience with UNIX platforms/vendor experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of Linux Server Technology support.
  • Experience managing Kubernetes on-prem solutions (Azure/AKS is a plus).
  • Working knowledge of High Availability and Load balancing technologies.
  • Expertise in hardening, testing, and monitoring systems against security threats, with exposure to PCI and SOX standards.
  • Familiarity with SAN and NAS technology.
  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of education/experience/certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with scripting in Perl, Python, and Standard Shell commands.
  • Knowledge of IBM Virtualization layer including HMC's and IBM Power Series Frame deployments.
