About the position

The Sr. Tax Accountant role is a critical position within the finance department, responsible for ensuring compliance with multi-state sales and use tax regulations. This position requires a thorough understanding of tax laws and the ability to manage the preparation and review of various tax returns. The Sr. Tax Accountant will be tasked with preparing and managing multi-state monthly and quarterly sales and use tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all applicable laws. Additionally, the role involves providing support to external preparers for the company's multi-state personal property tax returns, preparing annual business licenses, and monitoring annual reports across multiple jurisdictions. In this role, the Sr. Tax Accountant will also prepare occupational tax returns and assist in the preparation of the annual budget for property tax and sales tax. A significant part of the job will involve reviewing customer exemption certificates and communicating with customers to rectify any discrepancies. The use of tax software, specifically Avalara Sales Tax Software and Vertex/Avalara Tax Decision Maker, is essential for this position. The accountant will respond to audit inquiries related to sales and use tax as well as property tax audits, ensuring that the company is well-prepared for any external reviews. The ideal candidate will combine tax knowledge with technology to identify areas for improvement within the tax department, aiming for greater efficiencies. This position may also involve other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the finance team. A hybrid work schedule is available after the onboarding and training period, allowing for one day of remote work each week.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and manage multi-state monthly and quarterly sales and use tax returns
  • Provide support to the outside preparer of Company's multi-state personal property tax returns
  • Prepare annual business licenses and monitor annual reports for multiple jurisdictions
  • Prepare occupational tax returns
  • Assist in preparation of annual budget for property tax and sales tax
  • Review customer exemption certificates and communicate with customers when corrections are warranted
  • Utilize Avalara Sales Tax Software, including Avalara CertCapture
  • Maintain Vertex/Avalara Tax Decision Maker
  • Respond to audit inquiries for sales and use tax as well as property tax audits
  • Combine tax and technology knowledge to identify areas of improvement in the tax department to achieve greater efficiencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Associate Degree in Accounting
  • 3+ years of relevant tax experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough understanding of sales and use tax compliance in multiple jurisdictions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with employees and customers regarding tax matters
  • Experience with tax research tools
  • Experience with Vertex or Avalara sales tax software a plus
  • Manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel & Access
  • Experience with General Ledger Systems (JD Edwards Enterprise One or Oracle NetSuite, a plus)
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in order to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
