About the position

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Technical Writer to serve as the primary writer for the Director of the Center. This role is crucial in translating complex technical information into clear, concise, and engaging content that resonates with both technical and non-technical audiences while capturing the Director's tone and voice. The Senior Technical Writer will take initiative on assignments, demonstrating effective organizational and communication skills, and exercising discretion and sound editorial judgment. Reporting directly to the Director, the Senior Technical Writer will collaborate with communications personnel across Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University, as well as other key stakeholders. The primary focus of this position is to articulate the research and ideas of the Director effectively and with clarity. The Senior Technical Writer will be responsible for producing high-quality content to support the Director's communications, which includes speeches, presentations, research reports, articles, correspondence, op-eds, video scripts, and social media posts. It is essential that the content aligns with the intended audience and adheres to institutional branding and key messages, maintaining consistency in style, tone, and accuracy across all materials. In addition to content creation, the Senior Technical Writer will independently conceptualize content, conduct research, interview subject matter experts, and fact-check communications across various platforms. They will also collaborate with stakeholders to ensure messaging aligns with the institutional mission, strategic plan, and initiatives. The role requires reviewing and editing manuscripts and drafts for grammatical accuracy and to reflect the voice and priorities of the Director, as well as monitoring key issues and trends in health equity to incorporate relevant topics into content development.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality content to support the Director's communications, including speeches, presentations, research reports, articles, correspondence, op-eds, video scripts, and social media posts.
  • Independently conceptualize content, conduct research, interview subject matter experts, and fact-check communications across various platforms.
  • Develop and implement communications that are informative, accurate, and timely.
  • Adhere to institutional brand and key messages, maintaining consistency in style, tone, and accuracy across all materials.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to align messaging with institutional mission, strategic plan, and initiatives.
  • Review and edit manuscripts and drafts for grammatical accuracy and to reflect the voice and priorities of the Director.
  • Monitor key issues and trends in health equity to incorporate relevant topics into content development.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in related Technical/Scientific field.
  • In-depth subject matter knowledge.
  • One year of related experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in academic medicine, public health, healthcare, science, journalism, or corporate communications.
