About the position

The Sr. Trial Attorney position at Nationwide's Alabama Trial Office is designed for a seasoned litigation attorney with significant experience in civil litigation, particularly in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation. The role involves independently managing a high caseload, providing legal advice, and representing clients in various legal matters from pre-suit through trial. The attorney will work closely with clients and claims partners, ensuring timely communication and maintaining strong professional relationships. This position emphasizes a commitment to excellence, proactive case management, and mentorship of junior attorneys.

Responsibilities

  • Directly represent clients as lead counsel in legal matters assigned.
  • Provide legal advice and subject matter expertise in accordance with applicable Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Demonstrate trial advocacy skills and effective case management throughout all stages of litigation.
  • Utilize technology and collaborate with support staff for efficient case management.
  • Maintain awareness of changes in law and technology impacting litigation strategies.
  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with key partners and colleagues.
  • Mentor junior attorneys and provide guidance and training as needed.

Requirements

  • JD Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license in the state of Alabama.
  • Typically more than 8 years of relevant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation.
  • Significant litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation.
  • Proficient with case management software and Microsoft products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and legal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Dual licensure in Alabama and Georgia is desired but not required.
  • Experience in personal lines bodily injury, homeowners liability, first party property, subrogation, commercial premises liability, and commercial auto.
