About the position

The SSHA Graduate Services Coordinator at the University of California, Merced, plays a vital role in supporting the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA) across seven graduate programs. This position involves providing comprehensive student services, advising faculty, and facilitating the growth and development of graduate programs. The coordinator will manage graduate student funding, admissions, and academic support while collaborating with various university departments to enhance student success and program effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the administration and processing of academic student employee and graduate student researcher appointments, fellowships, and other awards.
  • Advise students and faculty on employment and funding options on campus and extramural fellowship opportunities.
  • Coordinate with the campus Academic Personnel Office, Payroll Office, and Graduate Division to ensure compliance with hiring requirements.
  • Provide guidance on financial aid options and oversee the administration of student fellowships, grants, and scholarships.
  • Advise students on degree requirements and alternative academic options, identifying those with progression problems and recommending interventions.
  • Facilitate student recruitment visits and advise prospective applicants on academic preparation and program appropriateness.
  • Plan and implement student events such as Graduate Orientation Week and Graduate Student Appreciation Week.
  • Monitor individual graduate student progress and facilitate registration for independent study courses.
  • Collaborate with SSHA Space Coordinator to manage graduate student workspace assignments and other administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in a student services job function, or an equivalent combination of education/training/experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem identification, reasoning, and development of original ideas to solve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse populations.
