About the position

The SSHA Graduate Services Coordinator at UC Merced plays a vital role in supporting the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA) by providing comprehensive services to graduate students across seven programs. This position involves advising students, managing graduate student funding, and collaborating with faculty and staff to enhance graduate programs. The coordinator is responsible for overseeing graduate student appointments, admissions, and academic support, ensuring a smooth experience for students and faculty alike.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the administration and processing of academic student employee and graduate student researcher appointments, fellowships, and other awards.
  • Advise students and faculty on employment and funding options on campus and extramural fellowship opportunities.
  • Coordinate with the campus Academic Personnel Office, Payroll Office, and Graduate Division to ensure compliance with hiring requirements.
  • Administer, evaluate, and award student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards.
  • Provide academic advising to graduate students and faculty on program requirements and policies.
  • Identify students with progression problems and recommend interventions.
  • Advise prospective applicants on academic preparation and program suitability.
  • Plan and implement student events such as Graduate Orientation Week and Graduate Student Appreciation Week.
  • Monitor individual graduate student progress and facilitate registration for independent study courses.
  • Collaborate with various university offices and teams for effective student services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in a student services job function, or an equivalent combination of education/training/experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and departmental principles and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem identification, reasoning, and development of original ideas to solve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse populations.
