About the position

The School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas is seeking a creative and organized student Communications Assistant to enhance the school's presence on social media and other digital platforms. This role involves supporting marketing efforts through videography, photography, and written content, contributing to the overall marketing communications strategy of the school. The Communications Assistant will work closely with the communications team to create engaging content that strengthens connections with current and prospective students.

Responsibilities

  • Take photos and record video using a DSLR camera for events, portraits, and interviews.
  • Edit photo and video projects to create polished content.
  • Brainstorm, write, and curate social media content.
  • Create on-brand social media graphics to enhance engagement.
  • Assist in the development of blog posts, news stories, and website content.
  • Research and interview contacts for articles to support content creation.
  • Pitch story ideas during communications meetings to foster collaboration.
  • Assist with email newsletters and other communications tasks as assigned.
  • Attend regularly scheduled communications team meetings to stay aligned with team goals.
  • Edit and proofread collateral to ensure high-quality output.

Requirements

  • Must be at least sophomore status in college.
  • Majoring in journalism, film, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • Some experience with social media, demonstrated through coursework or previous experience.
  • Some experience with Adobe Creative Suite, demonstrated through coursework or previous experience.
  • Availability to work in shifts of at least two consecutive hours between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours during the semester of appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic photography and video skills using various devices.
  • Experience with writing, editing, proofreading, and researching through coursework or previous work experience.
  • Past volunteer, internship, or employment experience in marketing and communications.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Self-starter with proficient time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
