About the position

Linfield University is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Staff Accountant to join our General Accounting team. This role will be pivotal in managing accounting operations, including overseeing the general ledger, endowment and investment accounts, fixed assets, and grant funds. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Controller to prepare quarterly unaudited financial statements, manage annual audits, and coordinate various financial activities, including tax filings and investment tracking. Responsibilities

  • Manage and reconcile general ledger accounts; create and link new accounts as needed.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries and trial balances.
  • Generate accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Monitor fixed assets within the general ledger.
  • Track asset project statuses, in-service dates, retirements/disposals, and cost allocations.
  • Manage accounting for endowments, third-party managed investments, and bond debt.
  • Record semi-annual bond payments and amortize financing costs.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Manager to support grant applications and reporting.
  • Assist in developing and managing the University's Indirect Cost Rate for Federal Grants.
  • Work with University Advancement on donor-related accounting and endowment funding.
  • Maintain accurate records of investments held by third parties, including Charitable Remainder Trusts.
  • Coordinate the preparation of schedules and reports required by independent auditors.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial close processes through account reconciliations and adjustments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field
  • Five years of accounting experience, including financial statement preparation and tax organizing
  • Two years of in-depth accounting experience with software reporting tools and spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of FASB, OMB policies, federal grant management, and GAAP pronouncements
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and project management skills
  • Ability to plan, conceptualize, and make sound business decisions with independent judgment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with audit processes

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA, CMA, or Master's degree in accounting preferred
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems and software tools, including MS Excel (advanced skills), MS Outlook, MS Teams, Adobe Acrobat, US Bank SinglePoint, FORVIS Connect (formerly BKD Connect)
  • Experience with university, fund accounting, auditing, and grants management
