About the position

The Finance Office at Whittier College is seeking a Staff Accountant. Under the supervision of the Assistant Controller, the Staff Accountant performs complex professional and technical accounting functions for the College and its related entities, while applying institutional policies and procedures, governmental accounting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles and practices. The Staff Accountant will reconcile accounting records, meet required deadlines, create financial reports to meet operational needs, and provide consultative services to supervisors and leads in resolving accounting problems and other financial duties as listed.

Responsibilities

  • General Accounting
  • Daily review of bank transactions, cash balances, and completion of monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare journal entries to record or reclassify various transactions and participate in the monthly, quarterly, and year end close.
  • Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts and various funding sources, which include but are not limited to cash accounts, federal and state financial aid funds, endowment accounts, student receivables, advancement, and auxiliary entities.
  • Maintain and create Banner detail codes and validate general ledger mapping for proper usage and recording to the general ledger.
  • Apply problem solving skills to identify, resolve, and recommend process improvements to recurring general ledger disruptions.
  • Respond to information requests from College personnel related to fiscal and budget administration.
  • Maintain and reconcile non-student account records.
  • Prepare and issue invoices to internal and external parties to request payment.
  • Prepare billback entries to various departments on campus.
  • Collect, reconcile, and deposit non-student account payments.
  • Provide support to and serve as coverage backup to various accounting staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Two years of general accounting and financial reporting experience, preferably from an institution of higher education or governmental entity.
  • Education is equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or finance.
  • Good knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and methods.
  • Good communication and exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures; meets deadlines; high attention to detail; understanding of accounting controls.
  • Intermediate skills with Excel, capable with Word; some knowledge of MS Access and databases.
  • Prior working experience in Ellucian Banner ERP System for Universities is a plus.
