About the position

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Staff Accountant with experience in accounting for the construction or general contracting industry. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of accounting principles, an understanding of tax law as it pertains to contractors, and the ability to analyze financial reports. This role is critical in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and supporting the financial health of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain financial statements specific to general contracting, including job costing and project-based accounting.
  • Track and report on project budgets, expenses, and profitability.
  • Analyze financial reports to identify trends in cash flow and project performance.
  • Provide actionable insights to management to support strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of tax liabilities, including sales tax, payroll tax, and other contractor-specific taxes.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing tax filings, leveraging knowledge of applicable tax laws for contractors.
  • Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations.
  • Assist with financial audits and provide accurate documentation for review.
  • Use industry-specific accounting tools, such as QuickBooks Contractor or other project management platforms, for efficient record-keeping and reporting.
  • Perform reconciliations, manage journal entries, and assist with accurate project close-outs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience in construction or general contracting accounting is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with tax law as it pertains to contractors is a plus.
  • Proficiency in project-based accounting, job costing, and tax compliance.
  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks Contractor, Sage 300, or other industry tools.
  • Strong analytical and financial reporting skills, with attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with project managers and stakeholders.
