About the position

The Staff ADAS Perception Systems Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the design and implementation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) perception requirements at General Motors. This role is crucial in supporting GM's vision of zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion by ensuring that all perception system requirements and performance aspects are met across various programs. The engineer will act as a Subject Matter Expert, guiding technical teams and collaborating with stakeholders to develop and validate system requirements and performance criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Design requirements for Perception systems for object detection and tracking across multiple sensor domains (camera, radars, LiDAR, Ultrasonics, etc).
  • Generate, write, and maintain system-level requirements based on vehicle ODD and use cases.
  • Create Acceptance Test Plans (ATP) requirements and DFMEA.
  • Provide technical leadership to execution teams for development and integration.
  • Define comprehensive design analysis of design solutions.
  • Communicate and support common best practices among the System/Software community.
  • Apply solid technical understanding and structured problem-solving approaches.
  • Define functional work splits and Interface Documents for major HW and SW components.
  • Analyze and negotiate requirements with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications using tools like DNG, X-ray, Raphsody, Jira, Jama.
  • Develop and refine models (Python and/or Matlab) for requirements generation.
  • Support HiL/Mil/SiL capabilities and collaborate with software, integration, and validation teams.
  • Promote a lean agile mindset aligning teams around customer value.
  • Develop the strategic plan for global performance requirements and ensure appropriate metrics are in place.
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to other teams.
  • Collaborate with other groups to shape the SW methodology and policy of GM autonomous driving SW.
  • Lead FMEA and allocate identified failure modes to execution teams.
  • Improve the efficiency and quality of Performance/Integration Standard Work.
  • Participate in cross-functional development team discussions to ensure alignment with peers and downstream customers.
  • Support the rollout of new features and advance projects.
  • Support SUFS owners with information and additional data as required.
  • Support global partners in training and execution of Active Safety features.
  • Occasionally travel internationally to lead global teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related Engineering degree.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant job-related engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead a technical team.
  • Excellent technical and non-technical written, oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Hands-on experience in system engineering requirement databases (e.g., DNG, X-Ray, Jama, DOORS).
  • Understanding and experience of perception software techniques and principles that enable automated driving technology.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining commitment to tasks.
  • Ability to identify problems, analyze varying courses of action, and execute contingency plans.
  • Ability to process large amounts of information and provide both high-level systems overview and deep subject matter expertise.
  • Experience with Python scripting and Matlab.
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science in Engineering or Master of Business Administration.
  • Previous experience (4+ years) as a systems engineer in AV/ADAS perception environments.
  • Proven track record of collaboration with software, integration, and validation teams.
  • Understanding and experience of Ultrasonics, Radar, Camera, and LiDAR sensing modalities.
  • Understanding and experience of World Model (object data consumption and vehicle reaction).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant job-related engineering experience.
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification.
