About the position

The Staff Attorney for Disaster Legal Services at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii will provide essential legal support to survivors of the 2023 wildfires on Maui Island. This role involves implementing a disaster legal services program, coordinating outreach and education efforts, and collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the legal assistance they need. The position requires a commitment to social justice and the ability to work effectively with diverse communities.

Responsibilities

  • Implement Legal Aid's disaster legal services program for survivors of the Maui wildfires.
  • Coordinate and provide direct legal services, education, and outreach.
  • Collaborate with key national and local partners to enhance service delivery.
  • Oversee the recruitment and training of pro bono attorneys to assist low-income individuals during disasters.
  • Plan and participate in community engagement and partnership building activities.
  • Staff Disaster Recovery Centers and community hubs to provide legal assistance.
  • Develop educational and self-help materials for disaster victims.
  • Supervise law students and pro bono volunteers as needed.

Requirements

  • Members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii preferred.
  • Located on Maui or willing to relocate to Maui.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with low-income populations.
  • Desire to develop litigation or administrative agency advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Prior disaster-related experience preferred.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse populations.
  • Experience working with individuals with physical and/or psychological disabilities is a plus.
  • Organizational skills to manage a busy practice and meet deadlines.
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to manage diverse activities with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required, familiarity with Microsoft Office preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in a language spoken by recent immigrants, such as Spanish, Ilokano, or Vietnamese is desired.
  • Experience organizing programs and working with community partners is a plus.
