About the position

The Staff Attorney position at the Superior Court is designed to assist an assigned Judge by performing a variety of legal and administrative tasks. The primary purpose of this role is to support the judicial process through legal research, case review, and the drafting of legal documents. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for training new law clerks and assisting with the implementation of new policies and procedures within the Superior Court system. This position requires a strong understanding of legal principles and the ability to analyze complex legal issues, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills. In this role, the Staff Attorney will review motions, pleadings, petitions, and other legal documents presented before the court. They will conduct thorough research on relevant state and federal laws, analyze legal issues, and provide legal opinions to the Judge. The Staff Attorney will also draft orders and present summaries, findings, and recommendations to the Judge based on their research and analysis. Observing court proceedings and taking detailed notes will be essential, as the Staff Attorney will need to address any legal issues that arise during hearings and present their findings to the Judge. Additionally, the Staff Attorney will manage the Judge's schedule, including making travel arrangements and scheduling meetings. They will communicate with attorneys, court personnel, and clients to gather and provide necessary information. The role also involves answering department telephones, greeting clients and visitors, and assisting with the implementation of new policies and procedures in the Superior Court. The Staff Attorney will be expected to maintain organized files and databases, ensuring that all information is up-to-date and accessible. Overall, this position plays a crucial role in the efficient functioning of the Superior Court, requiring a combination of legal expertise, administrative skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders in the judicial system.

Responsibilities

  • Assist an assigned Judge by performing legal research and providing administrative support.
  • Attend court hearings and review cases, motions, pleadings, and petitions.
  • Draft legal documents, including orders and summaries, for the Judge.
  • Observe court proceedings and take notes on legal issues that arise.
  • Enter information into department programs and databases, maintaining accurate records.
  • Prepare and maintain files of research, cases, and decisions.
  • Manage the Judge's schedule, including travel arrangements and meeting logistics.
  • Communicate with attorneys, court personnel, and clients to provide and obtain information.
  • Answer department telephones and greet clients and visitors, providing assistance as needed.
  • Assist with the implementation of new policies and procedures in Superior Court.
  • Train new law clerks and provide guidance on legal research and administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Juris doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia for at least four (4) years.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a law clerk or staff attorney in a Superior Court environment.
  • Membership in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
