About the position

The California Energy Commission is seeking a Staff Biologist (Energy Commission Specialist II) to work in the Siting, Transmission and Environmental Protection Division. This role involves performing complex technical analyses related to biological resources and natural resource conservation for energy facility projects. The Specialist will act as a subject matter expert, providing technical expertise to evaluate environmental impacts and ensure compliance with relevant laws such as the Warren-Alquist Act and CEQA. The position may also involve leading teams of technical specialists on complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Independently perform technical analyses for complex energy facility projects.
• Evaluate environmental effects of proposed energy facilities, policies, and plans.
• Provide complex technical expertise to satisfy requirements of the Warren-Alquist Act and CEQA.
• Act as a working team leader or lead person over a group of technical specialists on complex projects.

Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws for natural resource protection, including CEQA and the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
• Experience collaborating with federal and state agencies in evaluating impacts to natural resources.
• Experience conducting biological resources surveys and field studies.
• Experience conducting project compliance inspections to ensure adherence to permit conditions.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in developing mitigation strategies to reduce impacts on natural resources.
• Knowledge of the California Clean Water Act and California Endangered Species Act.
