About the position

Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Staff Civil Engineering Technician to operate, maintain, and repair specialized pavement data collection equipment for highway infrastructure assessment. This role supports ARA's contract with the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) State Materials Office (SMO) in Gainesville. The position does not require previous pavement testing experience, as comprehensive training will be provided to the selected candidate. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, flexibility, and a willingness to learn and face challenges. The job involves travel throughout the state, necessitating an excellent driving record and driving skills, as well as mechanical ability and basic computer knowledge. When not traveling, technicians will engage in office-based activities, including equipment maintenance and data processing. The pay for this position ranges from $19 per hour for those without pavement testing experience to $22 per hour for experienced equipment operators. Additionally, premium overtime pay is available for hours worked over 40 in a week. ARA offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life, and retirement plans.

Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized pavement data collection equipment for highway infrastructure assessment.
  • Maintain and repair pavement testing equipment as needed.
  • Perform office-based activities such as equipment maintenance and data processing when not traveling.
  • Travel throughout the state for data collection and assessment activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and operational standards during equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old with an excellent driving record.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
  • Mechanical ability, with previous mechanical experience preferred.
  • Willingness and availability to travel, sometimes for a week or more at a time.
  • Good communication skills and flexibility.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience operating pavement testing equipment such as pavement profilers or ground penetrating radar.
  • Experience performing routine inspections and troubleshooting issues with automobiles or specialized equipment.
