About the position

Burns & McDonnell's team in Detroit is seeking a Staff Civil or Environmental Engineer to join the Remediation Department within the Environmental Global Practice. This role involves collaboration and support for a diverse range of environmental investigation and remediation projects. In this role, individuals will work closely with the project team throughout the site evaluation, design, construction, and restoration processes. They will adapt environmental plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. The position requires experience and knowledge of various remediation phases, including investigation, data evaluation, permitting, ambient air monitoring, soil excavation, in-situ remediation technologies, and sample collection. Technical knowledge, leadership, and communication skills are essential for success in this position. Candidates should be team-focused and eager to learn procedures. The Staff Engineer will be part of an experienced team working on a variety of site investigation and remediation projects. Key responsibilities include executing and supervising soil and groundwater collection, data analysis, and groundwater modeling on multidisciplinary projects. This includes remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and the development of conceptual site models. The role also involves ensuring regulatory compliance and permitting, soil and groundwater contaminant remediation, stormwater compliance, and management, as well as remedial planning and design. The Staff Engineer will prepare technical reports, work plans, project specifications, and assist in the development and maintenance of project scopes, schedules, and budgets. Effective communication with peers, clients, and regulators is crucial, along with strong written, verbal, computer, and interpersonal skills. Additionally, the role includes performing environmental site investigations, collecting various environmental samples, preparing permitting applications, and managing subcontractor activities. The Staff Engineer will also assist in the design of remediation systems and perform Site Manager responsibilities throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring projects are completed within scope, budget, and schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and supervise soil and groundwater collection, data analysis, and groundwater modeling on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Conduct remedial investigations and feasibility studies, and develop conceptual site models.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and permitting for environmental projects.
  • Manage soil and groundwater contaminant remediation efforts.
  • Oversee stormwater compliance, permitting, and management.
  • Prepare technical reports, memorandums, work plans, and project specifications.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, clients, and regulators.
  • Perform environmental site investigations and collect various environmental samples.
  • Prepare a wide variety of permitting applications such as air, land use, and cultural resources permitting.
  • Review environmental investigation work plans, reports, and feasibility studies.
  • Prepare subcontractor contracts, scheduling, and management of field activities.
  • Assist in the design of remediation systems and environmental design of projects from conceptual phase to completion.
  • Perform Site Manager responsibilities for remediation projects from start to finish.
  • Work closely with project teams and field personnel to complete projects within scope, budget, and schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience required; 6 years plus is highly preferred.
  • Previous consulting experience is a plus.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (and annual updates) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and previous task management responsibilities are a plus.
  • Experience with and working knowledge of State and/or Federal regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team framework.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to multi-task (write reports, analyze data, review design tasks, etc.).
