About the position

As the Staff Data Engineer I, you are accountable to design, build, and implement critical components of the enterprise data platform in accordance with the strategic data and analytics needs of Western Alliance Bank. This challenging role requires the best of your data management, cloud data engineering and technology knowledge to develop a cross-business unit data tier that is leveraged to improve our products and deliver insights. The Staff Data Engineer I is a pioneer in our modern data platform working directly with data analysts and data engineers. Embedded in the Enterprise Data & Analytics function, you influence the culture of data integration practices and enterprise data flows and are essential to mentoring other data professionals. This role is also the lead engineer in a continuous delivery team dedicated to providing enterprise data flows and analytic solutions across our Western Alliance Bank business lines. You are the technical expert in a high-performing centralized team of data engineers, data analysts and QA engineers. You champion data quality and discipline in the full data lifecycle. You must demonstrate strong technical mastery as well as an ability to collaborate and communicate with both technical team members and business stakeholders. You partner closely with enterprise architects to understand and implement solutions based on the recommended Azure Cloud data architecture and capabilities. You are required to know and/or learn modern automation and integration methods and tools, with Cloud-First design patterns, frameworks, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Being knowledgeable and up to date in the analytics trends in the industry is a differentiator in your role. The ideal candidate is a strong technologist with a practical data engineering mindset, is outcome-focused, and fosters teamwork. This position is onsite only (4 days onsite and 1 remote day) located in either of the following locations: Phoenix, AZ / Dallas/Irving, TX / Columbus, OH.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and implement critical components of the enterprise data platform.
  • Develop a cross-business unit data tier to improve products and deliver insights.
  • Lead the implementation of outcomes, recommendations, and designs from Data Governance and Enterprise Architecture.
  • Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to understand business requirements and operational processes.
  • Implement data engineering solutions that satisfy the full data lifecycle including efficient technical hygiene.
  • Develop ETL and data pipeline capabilities considering data creation, transformation, maintenance, storage, archiving, analysis, and sharing.
  • Implement built-in quality and compliance-by-design in all data solutions.
  • Provide technical mentorship to team members and other data professionals.
  • Perform data exploration and data profiling with tools as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience in data management and/or data analytics.
  • 5+ years' experience with data engineering specifically in Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies; preferably strong to expert in SSIS and Azure Data Factory.
  • 3+ years' experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud data solutions; Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Azure DevOps CI/CD experience must.
  • Experience in programming languages such as Python, Powershell, etc.
  • Expert level experience with at least one RDBMS and query language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Spark SQL.
  • Experience in conceptual, logical, and physical data design.
  • Experience with design tools for creating conceptual architecture diagrams and data flow diagrams such as Visio, Archimate, Lucidchart.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with data science and analytics tools such as SPSS, SAS, Tableau, PowerBI.
  • Familiarity with multi-cloud data management and transformation platforms or tools such as Databricks, Snowflake, Matillion, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Agile, SAFe, and/or Scrum.
  • Experience integrating with data quality, data catalog and data lineage tools such as Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) is a plus.
  • Certifications within Azure such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, Azure Data Scientist, and/or Azure DevOps Engineer.
  • Banking or financial services industry experience or other highly regulated industry experience.
