Full-time - Senior

About the position

The Staff Data Scientist position at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Energy Geosciences Division focuses on organizing, processing, and analyzing large datasets related to earthquake simulations. The role is critical for developing data processing methods for visualizing ground motions and assessing engineering risks associated with energy systems. The Data Scientist will work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the EQSIM workflow and ensuring effective data visualization and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Work the back-end of the EQSIM workflow utilizing synthetic ground motions from regional scale simulations.
  • Lead the development of data processing for visualization and dynamic animation of ground motions.
  • Develop display approaches for ground motion intensity for engineering risk assessments.
  • Create large-data visualization methods for risk analysis of energy systems.
  • Master the utilization of the ZFP program for effective data compression of large scientific datasets.
  • Develop quantitative criteria for data compression without loss of critical scientific information.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of earth scientists and engineers for end-to-end earthquake simulations.
  • Contribute to and prepare publications based on data results and analysis.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent work experience, with at least six years of relevant experience in structural or earthquake engineering (PhD preferred).
  • Experience utilizing and visualizing earthquake ground motions generated from the SW4 geophysics program.
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments.
  • Understanding of geotechnical engineering and basic geophysics of wave propagation (preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing visualization methods (e.g., GMT) for earthquake risk assessment.
  • Strong skills in executing and processing data from thousands of earthquake simulations on massively parallel computer platforms.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in a relevant field.

Benefits

  • Full-time career appointment with exempt status from overtime pay.
  • Salary range of $12,000 to $12,500 monthly, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
