About the position

At Relativity Space, we are on a mission to revolutionize the aerospace industry and pave the way for humanity's future on Mars. As a Staff Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in our Structures team, which is responsible for the design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of our launch vehicle integrated structures and flight mechanisms. This position offers you the unique opportunity to take ownership of hardware throughout the entire product lifecycle, allowing you to validate your designs through rigorous testing at our state-of-the-art factory located in Long Beach, California. In this role, you will be integral to the development of our Terran R rocket, a medium-to-heavy lift reusable vehicle designed to meet the increasing demand for launch capacity. Your work will involve collaborating with various teams to create world-class integrated launch vehicles, contributing to the success of our Terran 1 launch and the ongoing development of the Terran R program. You will be expected to thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating adaptability and self-motivation while effectively communicating with peers and leadership. Your responsibilities will encompass designing vehicle structures at different maturity phases, from conceptual to critical design, and managing the vehicle's Bill of Materials (BOM) configuration, mass inputs, and part release schedules. You will also define and manage interfaces between vehicle subsystems, ensuring that appropriate control documents and models are utilized. Additionally, you will be tasked with developing design process improvements through simplification or automation, all while fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Designing vehicle structures at various maturity phases: conceptual to critical design
  • Initial drawing creation and executing revisions due to engineering or manufacturing changes
  • Ownership of the vehicle BOM configuration, mass inputs, and part release schedule
  • Defining and managing interfaces between vehicle subsystems using appropriate control documents & models
  • Developing design process improvement via simplification or automation

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or related technical discipline
  • 8+ years of related experience
  • Experience designing and managing large CAD assemblies and associated drawings
  • Experience with ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, Y14.41
  • Experience using NX and Teamcenter

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated development, packaging and configuration management experience on technically complex hardware products
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering design, analysis, manufacturing and testing
  • Knowledge of aerospace vehicle fabrication and assembly techniques
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and project management skills
