About the position

The Staff Electrical Engineer - Mission Critical position at Burns & McDonnell focuses on designing electrical systems for mission-critical data center projects. This role is integral to the Mission Critical team, which operates in a rapidly growing sector of high-tech building design and construction. The engineer will collaborate across various departments to ensure the safety and compliance of electrical systems while advising clients on their needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems/equipment to provide for a useful and safe workplace.
  • Advise clients regarding electrical systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.
  • Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.
  • Participate in developing the design criteria for protective device coordination, relay applications, medium voltage transformers, switchgear, medium and low voltage distribution.
  • Review electrical designs and specifications of equipment or systems being purchased or fabricated.
  • Develop concept studies and design.
  • Enforce standards and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, along with 3 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Master Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs and other analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Data center or telecommunication facility experience.
  • Knowledge of critical facility electrical design.
  • Understanding of NFPA 70, 70E, 75, 101 and other applicable sections.
  • Ability to write specifications for electrical equipment, devices, and material.
  • Familiarity with other building systems and coordination with those systems and components.
  • EIT professional designation with ambition to attain PE license.
