About the position

The Staff Electrical Engineer at Burns & McDonnell will play a crucial role in designing high voltage substations, focusing on either protection & control design or physical design. This position offers opportunities for on-the-job training, technical mentorship, and personal and professional development, allowing engineers to build their careers while contributing to diverse project teams and client success.

Responsibilities

  • Complete protection & control design or physical design on various substation projects.
  • Create/modify single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, communication diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable lists, and relay panel arrangements.
  • Perform calculations such as DC battery sizing, AC load sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill, and control cable sizing.
  • Create/modify technical specifications for major equipment, such as power transformers and power circuit breakers.
  • Coordinate with SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and P&C design staff for system integration.
  • Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings.
  • Assist with client communication and manufacturer drawing reviews.
  • Research solutions to project concerns and recommend solutions to problems.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager and others as needed.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
  • Knowledge of basic protection principles and practices for transmission lines and substation equipment.
  • Familiarity with microprocessor-based protection and control systems.
  • Experience in substation physical layout, electrical clearances, and raceway design.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, and ANSI.
  • 3 years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in consulting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • Successful completion of FE or EIT, or PE preferred.
