About the position

The Staff Engineer, Process Control at WestRock is responsible for supporting PLC and DCS control systems throughout the mill. This role involves designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting control systems while ensuring successful upgrades and migrations of obsolete systems. The engineer acts as the primary process control representative for production areas, collaborating with operations and maintenance teams to address performance gaps and meet production targets. Additionally, the position includes project management responsibilities and training for operators and mechanics on process control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary Process Control support to assigned production areas within the mill.
  • Work closely with process area owners to determine and meet process control needs.
  • Develop alternatives and estimates for proposed capital and major maintenance projects.
  • Provide Project Management and Process Control engineering in the development and execution of maintenance and capital projects.
  • Support the Maintenance team in troubleshooting problems with the processes and process control systems.
  • Assist in training and knowledge sharing with operators and E/I mechanics on process control systems.
  • Share responsibility for providing weekend and off-hour support for mill needs.
  • Plan, configure, test, implement, and maintain process control system upgrades and modifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Chemical Engineering with a focus in controls.
  • Process knowledge of Pulp and Paper Manufacturing or other continuous manufacturing processes.
  • Strong computer skills including data analysis.
  • Experience with control loop tuning, performance evaluation tools, and process data historians (e.g., OSI PI, Control Performance Monitor).
  • Experience with instrumentation and electrical systems associated with Process Control Systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical infrastructure including drives and switchgear.
  • Experience in Ethernet Networking and Industrial Communication Protocols.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and capital projects from concept to installation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with Siemens control systems including S5/S7 hardware and software, and PC7 DCS platforms.
  • Experience with three-phase motors, motor controls, variable speed drives, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with Foxboro IA DCS systems.
  • Exposure to capital project control system upgrades.
  • Proficiency with paper mill instrumentation.
