About the position

GEICO is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. In this role, you will play a crucial part in driving our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization focused on engineering excellence. You will co-create a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement, ensuring that our engineering practices are top-notch and aligned with our business goals. As a Staff Engineer, your responsibilities will span multiple areas, providing both technical and thought leadership to the enterprise. You will collaborate closely with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to tackle our toughest challenges. Your role will involve developing and executing a technical software development strategy for the Platform Engineering domain, ensuring that the solutions we deliver are of the highest quality, usability, and performance. You will also serve as a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community. This includes influencing and educating executives on best practices and process improvements. You will analyze costs and forecasts, incorporating them into business plans, and determine resource requirements while evaluating operational processes to measure outcomes and ensure desired results. Additionally, you will be responsible for on-call and operational support, demonstrating adaptability and sponsoring continuous learning within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on multiple areas and provide technical and thought leadership to the enterprise
  • Collaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve our toughest problems
  • Develop and execute technical software development strategy for the Platform Engineering domain
  • Own accountability for the quality, usability & performance of the solutions
  • Be a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community
  • Influence and educate executives
  • Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
  • Analyze cost and forecast, incorporating them into business plans
  • Determine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results
  • Demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learning
  • Take on-call and operation support

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on experience in complex system design and data pipeline and architectures, scale and performance, tuning, with good knowledge on Docker and Kubernetes
  • Fluent in at least two OOP languages such as Java, Go, Python, C++, etc.
  • Good knowledge of two of the following languages: C, PHP, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, shell script, etc.
  • Understand open-source databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc., familiar with No-SQL databases like Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch; knowledge with NewSQL database like TIDB, Cockroach or YugabyteDB will be a plus
  • Exemplary ability to design, perform experiments, and influence engineering direction and product roadmap
  • Experience partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to production
  • Track record of publications history in credible conferences and journals
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
  • Experience solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, test automation and related tools, operations, real-time communication)
  • Experience on open-source database platforms with emphasis on building enterprise scale RDMS and NoSQL platforms
  • Knowledge in big data and streaming data architecture (Lambda/Kappa), K8 cluster and ETL pipeline
  • Knowledge in ML and AI technologies
  • Experience in CI/CD pipeline and related open-source tools like GIT/Jenkins/CircleCI/SonarQube; knowledge in Terraform/Ansible will be a big plus
  • Knowledge on Open-source monitoring software like Grafana and Prometheus
  • 6+ years of professional PaaS and IaaS experience
  • 4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
  • 3+ years of experience with architecture and design
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Terraform and Ansible
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages beyond the required ones
  • Experience in mentoring junior engineers
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies
