About the position

The Staff Hardware Design Engineer - Aggregators at General Motors is responsible for overseeing the design and execution of hardware for Aggregators, ensuring quality and timely delivery of products. This role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, leading a team of electrical hardware designers, and developing strategies for continuous improvement in hardware development processes. The engineer will also be involved in various aspects of hardware design, including embedded designs, electrical schematic design, and PCB layout, while ensuring integration with other engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and guide a team of electrical hardware designers, providing technical direction and ensuring productivity.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams for seamless integration of designs.
  • Lead embedded designs for advanced module architectures and new IC design/development.
  • Conduct electrical schematic design and PCB layout.
  • Assess feasibility of proposed designs considering cost, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support next generation designs in digital/analog hardware including Gig+ ethernet and various semiconductors.
  • Perform and review electrical worst case analysis.
  • Represent the GM HW team as a design expert in core technologies.
  • Optimize five-point parametric tests and finalize end of line production tests.
  • Act as a liaison with contract houses as a build-to-print engineer.
  • Apply cost-effective solutions with improved performance design.
  • Lead product development as part of multi-hub engineering organizations.
  • Refine and optimize requirements with MPG team.
  • Maintain Aggregator Hardware Design deliverables such as Block Diagrams and Schematics.
  • Lead peer reviews and identify integration and systemic issues.
  • Support Engineering Change Requests (ECR) of Aggregators and assembly plant issue resolution.
  • Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting activities and support product investigations.
  • Lead cost reduction initiatives and provide guidance to Design Release Engineers (DREs).
  • Create and maintain best practices and collaborate with various teams to ensure program imperatives are met.
  • Work with DRE/Validation group to set up and execute component validation plans.
  • Participate in formal design, peer, and quality valve reviews as required by the Vehicle Development Process (VDP).
  • Develop, review, and approve all in-process electrical test plans.
  • Support vehicle integration activities for pre-production and production vehicles.
  • Lead issue resolution for design and development issues, ECU warranty analysis, and report updates as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in hardware electronics design.
  • Experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation and PCB layout.
  • Proficiency in design and analysis tools like Mentor Graphics, MathCad, PSpice, and Saber.
  • Knowledge of high-speed communication buses (Ethernet, PCIe, SerDes).
  • In-depth knowledge of low voltage power distribution and requirements engineering processes.
  • Experience with verification and validation processes and embedded software development.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Masters degree in Engineering.
  • Previous industry experience with compute, connectivity, Body, or low voltage distribution.
  • Working experience in automotive hardware electronics design.
  • Understanding of hardware design and failure modes.
  • Knowledge of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms.
