About the position

We are seeking a high-performing Staff Hardware Engineer interested in leading the strategic selection and development of semiconductors for use across the enterprise. This individual will be instrumental in building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, guiding electronics design, and ensuring optimal semiconductor selections for GM applications. This role is specifically for a staff hardware engineer with a strong focus on System on a Chip (SoC) and memory silicon. This individual will need to have strong technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to analyze advanced SoCs and other complex silicon to enable ideal selections for GM applications. The selected individual will be expected to provide thought leadership, foster innovation, facilitate communication, and inspire passion. In addition, it is expected they will exhibit strong leadership behaviors, actively champion change, demonstrate a high level of intuition for business, strategically focus on addressing systemic issues, possess a high level of learning agility, ability to deal with ambiguity and complexity, and a tendency to expand the boundaries of innovation and not accept the status quo.

Responsibilities

  • Develop written specifications for components within scope of responsibility, enabling semiconductor engineers to facilitate on-time sourcing activities in accordance with electronics development and vehicle program timing requirements.
  • Drive semiconductor industry standardization and innovation to meet future architecture goals.
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with electronics hardware/software engineering, purchasing, and suppliers to implement semiconductor strategic objectives.
  • Establish use-case level domain specific expertise for semiconductors used across the enterprise along with the planned ECU portfolio pipeline.
  • Understand market semiconductor product portfolios, supply chains, and technology roadmaps.
  • Provide technical coaching for the semiconductor engineering teams during the design, application selection, technical reviews, and sourcing phases.
  • Act as the technical owner for various GM organizations, including ECU and device teams, electrical architecture teams, and software teams.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical/Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in hardware design and development.
  • Deep understanding of automotive SoC architecture, memory hierarchy, and ASIC design flow.
  • Knowledge of SoC IPs (memory, analog, processor, interconnects, etc.).
  • Understanding of IP Block.
  • Experience with SoC silicon bring-up and Tier 1 level ECU hardware engineering.
  • Experience with different memory types (DDR, NOR, NVM, UFS, etc.).
  • Strong comprehension of automotive hardware design requirements.
  • Experience with circuit/schematic design and analysis, worst case analysis calculations, DFMEA, and circuit simulation.
  • Expertise in technical evaluations of semiconductor vendors and IP, and in assessing process node tradeoffs to meet performance, power, and cost objectives.
  • Experience in semiconductor selection based on requirements, benchmarks, and evaluation studies.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting issues and validating hardware, software, EMC, and thermal issues.
  • Proficiency with lab equipment (power supplies, high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, logic/protocol analyzers).
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; proven ability to work across functional and organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to learn quickly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree/PhD in Electrical/Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of embedded firmware development (C/C++) and programming and scripting language such as Python.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the software development lifecycle, particularly in embedded systems and automotive applications.
  • Industry expertise in SoC architecture definition through work at semiconductor company.
  • Experience designing SOC's.
  • Experience with a range of technologies, including embedded processors, PCIe, Ethernet, SerDes, NoC, etc.
  • Experience building Hardware Modules.
  • In-depth knowledge of PCB design and manufacturing, DFM, and applying EMC/EMI best practices.
  • Experience leading ECU product development from requirement definition phase to production.
  • Technical background in semiconductor design & fabrication.
