About the position

The Staff Interpreter at the Decatur Regional Center of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) plays a crucial role in providing interpreting services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals. This position involves interpreting in various settings, including legal, medical, and community environments, while also offering sign language instruction and conducting workshops. The Staff Interpreter will assist in securing interpreting agreements and contribute to community education about deaf awareness and interpreting services.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals in various settings.
• Assist the Interpreter Coordinator in securing interpreting agreements with community agencies.
• Conduct sign language instruction and community education workshops.
• Maintain an interpreting database and assist with scheduling, billing, and payroll.
• Participate in regional center activities and events, such as Deaf Awareness and educational workshops.
• Enter consumer information into a database for demographic purposes.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.

Requirements

• Possess and maintain Alabama Interpreter Renewable Permit upon employment.
• Knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting.
• Minimum entry sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI) upon hire.
• Valid driver's license and automobile for use on the job with liability insurance.
• Submit to a fingerprint background check upon offer of employment.

Nice-to-haves

• One (1) year or more of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind.
