About the position

The Staff Interpreter at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) plays a crucial role in providing interpreting services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals across various settings. This position is integral to ensuring effective communication and accessibility for individuals with hearing and vision loss, contributing to AIDB's mission of serving individuals of all ages. Staff Interpreters will also engage in community education and workshops, assist in securing interpreting agreements, and support the Interpreter Coordinator in various administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals in legal, business, medical, and personal settings.
  • Assist the Interpreter Coordinator in securing interpreting agreements with community agencies.
  • Conduct sign language instruction and community education workshops.
  • Maintain an interpreting database and assist with scheduling, billing, and payroll.
  • Participate in regional center activities such as Deaf Awareness and educational workshops.
  • Enter consumer information into a database for demographic tracking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain Alabama Interpreter Renewable Permit upon employment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting.
  • Valid driver's license and automobile for use on the job with liability insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year or more of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind.
